Space Shooter Prototype

Project Overview

I developed a 2D space shooter in Unity, progressing through three distinct prototypes. Each iteration of the game focused on refining the core mechanics of the game such as the player movement, shooting, and the enemy behaviours. I used Unity's prefab system for rapid prototyping, implemented multiple bullet and enemy types, and iterated on the game based on testing and feedback. This project demonstrates my ability to design, implement and polish engaging gameplay using C# and Unity as well as rapid prototyping a simple game based on given parameters and ideas.

Responsibilities

  • Implemented responsive player movement and shooting mechanics
  • Implemented health and UI systems for health, special ability, score, game over
  • Enemy Design and Behaviour for three distinct enemy types

Powerups and Special Abilities

  • Implemented a score-driven power-up bar that visually tracks how much you need to gain the speical ability attack
  • Developed a player-triggered special attack that fires multiple projectiles in all directions for strategic play
  • Added a combo system tha rewards players with bonus points for defeating three different colored enemies in succession, encouraging strategic and varied gameplay
  • Balanced power-up effects and recharge rate based on playtesting and player feedback to ensure a balance between challenging and rewarding gameplay

Prototyping and Iteration

  • Researched and analyzed existing arcade shooters to inform my inital design and feature implementations
  • Developed and tested thrree distinct prototpyes, each addressing specific gameplay, balancing and usability issues identified thorugh playtesting.
  • Incorporaed player feedback at every stage, refining mechanics such as enemy variety, power-ups, health systems and scoring
  • Rapidly implemented and adjusted new features such as combo bonuses, enemy behaviours and powerup activation based on tester suggestions
